Super Series Returns for 2021!

OSC Super Series Update!

What is the Super Series/Quick recap:

In 2020 we created the Super Series as a format to trial ongoing leaderboards for select tournament series with the goal to develop further narratives within our SC2 League over the year (The top 6 ranked players of each leaderboard have been featured and updated on our home page through 2020).

6 regular weekly tournament series each had a top 4 leaderboard qualifier sending through their season champion into the Mid Season Playoffs (3 times per year).

These series champions were joined by 10 OSC Elite Rewards Club members in a double elim bracket to compete for $1500 USD + attempt to lock in a top seed for our 8th annual championship. (Everyone who qualified for the Mid Playoffs got paid!)

Mid Sesaon Playoffs #1, Champion: Cure

Mid Sesaon Playoffs #2, Champion: Solar

Mid Sesaon Playoffs #3, Champion: MaNa

Super Series + Mid Season Playoffs will be returning in 2021!

We’re very happy with how the Super Series and Mid Season Playoffs worked, and helped achieve the goal of keeping the annual Championship front of mind over a long calendar season. So it was an easy choice to bring it back for 2021!

We received some feedback from the weekly Super Series events requesting to review if more than 1 player should advance from their respective leaderboard qualifier, given the 12-15 week season + qualifier bracket. This was done, and we have decided to award 2 seeds into each Mid Season Playoff from each leaderboard top 4 qualifier!

In 2021, 1st place of each qualifier will start in the Mid Season Playoffs Upper Bracket R1 (Top 16), vs 10 OSCE Club members, while 2nd place of each qualifier will start in the Mid Season Playoffs Lower Bracket 1, along with 2 OSCE Club members (These 8 players will play vs the losers of Upper Bracket R1).

$100 will be added to the prizepool of each Mid Season Playoffs, so that we maintain that all who play will cash!

1st $500
2nd $250
3rd $150
4th $120
5/6th $75
7/8th $60
9/12th $32.5
13/16th $25
17/24th $10

The winner of each Mid Season Playoffs still secures themself an important top 20 annual Championship Upper Bracket starting point, a big advantage to one’s path to World Champion (In 8 years, no player is yet to win a Championship from a lower bracket or earlier starting position, although we have had a couple of runners up)!

In:
SDC Cup, a new weekly KR server open event by Some Drunk Canadian. $50 Prizepool.

We will also continue to run a monthly OSC Elite Rewards Club Open Qualifier (6 month membership prize) for SC2 players, open to all non members, or current members whose memberships are expiring in less than 2 months. We will mix up when these qualifiers run, to accommodate all player regions.

As always we value your feedback throughout the year. Please reach out to League Management or your Regional Player Representatives to let us know how you feel the Super Series is working in 2021.

IN:

eXoN Cup Opens

The eXon Opens are organised and run by Team eXoN and Tantalizing Tarariums.

A new tournament created in 2020, the $50 cup has been running for 6 editions so far, and has averaged an impressive 28 signups (in a difficult timeslot) in that time.

We’re happy to see not only it’s introducition into the Super Series, but also that the event will be changing from BiWeekly to Weekly from cup #7 onwards/start of Super Series season 3!

It’s an event the NA community really seems to be rallying their support towards, and we’re excited to see that continue as part of the Super Series!

Cock of the Walk

The COTW is a weekly tournmaent hosted by popular streamer + commentator Chickenman!

The weekly has been running for 24 editions so far, with a $35 prizepool on offer!

We’re happy to see not only it’s introducition into the Super Series, but also that the weeklies prizepool shall be increasing from cup #25 onwards/start of Super Series season 3, to $50!!

OUT:
Masters Cup

The Masters Cup franchise is not only one the of longest running regular SC2 events, but also one of the longest running in all of competitive esports, so despite being rotated out of the Super Series, rest assured, the Masters Cups won’t be going anywhere! We shall be returing the Masters Cup to an extended format which has proven popular in the past: Bo2 groups > Playoffs, played out over 5-6 weeks. 50% of participants will cash!

With the addition of one extra series + weekly pathway into the 16 player Mid Season Playoff bracket, 1 OSC Elite Rewards Club member seed will be reduced:
2 Qualifiers, Top 3 of each advance (6)
Top 3 members remaining from the World Rankings invited (3)
1 Random Draw, winner invited (1)

Super Series Season 3 starts with eXoN Cup Open #7 (August 26th 9pm EDT /27th 10am KST)

We will also continue to run a monthly OSC Elite Rewards Club Open Qualifier (6 month membership prize) for SC2 players, open to all non members, or current members whose memberships are expiring in less than 2 months. We will mix up when these qualifiers run, to accomadate all player regions.

IN:

IndyK Crew Weeklies

Their weekly cup has been running for #14 editions so far, boasting a modest $25 Prizepool.

However, the event has been punching well above it’s weight: utalizing and building their large community to average 31 Signups and 26 Checkins, with highs of 47 + 37 respectively, numbers more akin to larger events!

We’re happy to see not only it’s introducition into the Super Series, but also that the weeklies prizepool shall be increasing from cup #15 onwards/start of Super Series season 2, to $35!!

Shyrshadi Opens

Despite running in a tradionally challenging timezone, the event has posted very healthy Signup and Check In numbers over it’s run.

New $25,000 2020 Super Series: Weekly Cups with Individual Leaderboards, Midseason Championship Playoffs and New Point Bonuses!

Introducing the OSC Super Series!

In 2020, we want to trial ongoing leaderboards for select tournament series with the goal to develop further narratives within the SC2 League over the year.

Players and fans alike have been able to follow daily updates of who the top online players are based on results of our 500+ tournament league over the course of each year via our ongoing World Rankings. For 2020 we thought it would be interesting to try and take that further yet again to see and track results from specific events!?

Our hope is that these new leaderboards will add further incentive to play as often as possible, by giving players another target to achieve, as well as increasing both familiarity and friendships with your ‘regulars’. On the flip side, narratives such as building healthy rivalries/competition between those regulars and oneself, tracking their and your own results week to week for leaderboard standings, and giving you ‘regulars’ from within your tournament series to cheer for against other opponents in other events (Such as in the mid season playoffs mentioned below).

We also want to trial (3) Mid Season Qualifiers/Playoffs for our OSC Season 8 Championship, keeping the Championship front and center of mind and a target throughout the year, rather than a late season rush to secure seeding and qualify as sometimes occurs in the past.

Each Playoff winner is guaranteed a top 20 seed in OSC Season 8 Championship!

(Winners seed = Championship Bracket, Upper Bracket, 17-20th starting position)
If a Playoff winner finishes the season in a higher rank than their playoff seed, the next ranked player from the World Rankings will be promoted to the Championship Bracket, Upper Bracket: Unfortunately you can’t take 2 spots!

Leaderboard ‘mini seasons’ should run about 3.5 months, with playoffs to follow each.

Leaderboard Jan- end April (~Early May Playoffs)

Leaderboard May-Mid August (~Mid August Playoffs)

Leaderboard Mid August- early December (~Mid December Playoffs)

Each Playoff winner earns a direct seed into our OSC Season 8 Championship: Championship Bracket!

We have allocated $25,000 AUD / $17,500 USD towards this new Super Series system in 2020.

Selected trial tournament series for 2020:

1.$100 Masters Cups (Open)

2.$50 Community Opens (Open)

3.$50 Battle of the Americas (NA + LATAM only)

4.$50 Passioncraft Sunday Showdowns (Open)

5.$35 Australian Opens (Open)

All these regular tournaments are played within 24 hours of each other, over the weekend, covering all regions/time zones! A huge day of SC2!

At the end of each one-third point of the OSC season, the top 4 players from each tournament leaderboard will compete against each other for a spot in the $1500 playoffs.

Those 5 tournament leaderboard qualified players will then be joined by 11 OSC Elite Reward Club Members (Top 4 from OSC Rankings, 3 from Qualifier #1, 3 from Qualifier #2, + 1 from a Random Draw) in the playoffs. All top 16 will be paid!

We will also be running a monthly OSC Elite Rewards Club Open Qualifier (6 month membership prize) for SC2 players, open to all non members, or current members whose memberships are expiring in less than 2 months. We will mix up when these qualifiers run, to accomadate all player regions.

Why only those 5 series/What about the rest of the tournaments?

This is a trial. A League wide sample size is a big undertaking, and we feel an unnecessary one to test our goals. We have deliberately selected a mix of cups across all timezones, specifically over the weekend, electing to include 2 long running franchises (Masters Cups + SC2Online Community Opens), a weekly rework of a popular 2018 regional idea (Battle of the Americas), an open challenge to vs players from our traditional home base on their turf (Australian Open), and replacing the fan favourite Sunday Heroes series with a new weekly from an EU staple brand with a large following (Passioncraft).

All your other favourites will still run as per the last few years, just not a part of the Super Series at this stage. The Super Series is just a small section within the greater League circuit.

We also feel that 5 is a good amount of leaderboard seeds to begin with, and will be filling the remaining playoff positions from our dedicated members in the OSC Elite Rewards Club. Another perk of joining the club!

If need be, one or more of these new series can be replaced for another after each mid season playoff.

If the ongoing leaderboards prove to be as successful as hope, we may expand the format to include all regular League events. Possibly later in the year, but more likely 2021.

New Points Change for ALL Open Tournaments + Qualifiers in 2020:

We’re always on the lookout for ways to improve our rankings system, and research into other sports has found one such addition that might do just that for 2020. We shall be bringing in new bonus points for the top placing players in each cup, strictly based on the size of the playing field that cup.

The rationale behind this is the bigger the tournament, the harder it is to place highly/win. For instance placing top 8 in a 50-60 player cup, is more difficult than a 20 player cup. And sometimes we see fluctuations week to week even within the same tournament series. Prior to this points for placing have been the same, regardless of bracket size.

Thus we will be adding +0.25 Pts x Number of players to the top 8 players in $50+ open cups/qualifiers and +0.25 Pts x Number of players to the top 4 of $20+ open cups/qualifiers.

As always we value your feedback throughout the year. Please reach out to League Management or your Regional Player Representatives to let us know how you feel the Super Series is working in 2020.
